We’ve never gotten into the details of our products and packaging too much, but it’s time that we do. So let’s get into the nitty gritty details of it all. Being as transparent as a jellyfish for you, our lovely patrons.

We have always wanted to make our brand as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible. But we as a brand started with very humble beginnings (read more about the journey here) and anything eco-friendly was unfortunately on the higher end for a startup.

Since starting LIMN in 2016, we were able to make so many changes towards the path we want to be in since 2020 without compromising on quality.

Proud to say that LIMN is a 90% eco-friendly and sustainable brand. We currently use plastic only in the form of sleeves which are used to cover our notebooks and journals from dust and grime, which makes for less than 5% of our material usage and the other 5% comes from the cotton fabrics to make some of our products, though cotton is sustainable, renewable, biodegradable resource compared to the other materials available in the market — it just hasn’t had the opportunity to live up to that potential just yet. Unfortunately, there hasn't been a solution out for this in the market yet in India as far as our research goes. Hopefully, this will change soon too.

ALL THINGS PAPER:

Any and all of our products made with paper are FSC® certified.

FSC is an acronym for the Forest Stewardship Council which is an independent, non-governmental, non- profit organisation that was established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.

They are the leaders in sustainable forestry that protect healthy, resilient forests for all, forever. 

The use of FSC materials can help to reduce the pressure of demand on sources of virgin material, thereby helping to protect the world’s forests and in return effectively managing and handling waste.

Basically what the FSC does is create material which is made from responsibly sourced wood fibre and the forests from which it has been harvested are managed in a way that reduces their environmental impact. It also uses half the amount of water that virgin paper does.

ALL THINGS SEWN:

All products on LIMN are made by women-led organisations or women who come from underprivileged backgrounds looking to make an income by following their passion. We are lucky enough to be able to give them a platform for them to do so. Without our team of superwomen, we are nothing!

Here, we will take you through the cloth based materials we use for our keychains and scrunchies.

KEYCHAINS:

All our keychains and scrunchies are made with 100% cotton. Cotton is an all-natural fibre that grows well in several climates and can be harvested fairly easily. Even though cotton is sustainable, renewable, biodegradable resource compared to the other materials available in the market — it just hasn’t had the opportunity to live up to that potential just yet. There hasn’t been a replacement for cotton yet in the Indian market as per our research. Organic cotton is a great material but is not as versatile as cotton, yet. Hopefully, this too will change soon.

SCRUNCHIES:

Majority of our scrunchies are made using cotton or satin. Satin is mostly made of polyester, which already has a hugely reduced environmental impact during production compared to silk. There are already plenty of synthetic materials in the world today that won't biodegrade and can be reused, making recycled satin a good alternative. The elastic we use for our scrunchies are made with organic cotton blended with natural rubber which is kinder to the planet and better for your hair. It also prevents any possible nasty fibres washing away into our water.

ALL THINGS FIRE:

All our candles are made with 100% plant-based wax. They are free from paraffin, palm, additives and dyes.

Soy wax / plant-based candles are a blend of wax and botanical oils which are completely healthy and toxin free. They are sustainable, biodegradable and burn longer than paraffin candles. All the essential oils are locally sourced and organic. Our 100% cotton wicks are biodegradable. Most importantly, our candles are 100% cruelty free.

We used scraps of wood that we had found in local stores in and around India to make the wooden lids for our candles, hence each lid will have a different colour/ grain. We take great effort and pride in doing these little things for a big impact.

ALL THINGS PACKAGING:

Our packaging materials are made using Kraft paper which are manufactured from wood pulp, making it organic. They can be recycled upto seven times. All our packaging supplies are proudly made and manufactured in India.
